1772 Pinot Noir 2021
2021 was a long, cool growing season. The combination of variable weather and strong winds in the spring slowed development and affected bloom and set, creating differing yields in the vineyards. However, the lower yields, cooler temperatures and longer growing season produced grapes with pronounced acidity and excellent concentration.
Vineyard
The grapes for this wine are sourced entirely from our Edna Ranch, located in the heart of the San Luis Obispo Coast AVA. We selected grapes from eight different blocks that feature three of our prized clones: Dijon 667, HMR, and Pommard. The combination of classic HMR and Pommard clones with the newer Dijon 667 creates extraordinary aromatics and an excellent structure for aging.
Winemaking
All eight blocks were fermented separately in open top stainless-steel tanks with a mix of cool and hot fermentations that gave us a wide variety of blending components, some herbal and earthy, others fresher and fruitier. Aged for 9 months in 100% French oak with 17% new.
Nose: Aromas of black cherry and ripe strawberry with notes of anise, rose, vanilla and tobacco.
Palate: Medium bodied with a wonderful interplay between the acai berry, cranberry and pomegranate fruit, and the black tea, tobacco, peppercorn and dark earth flavors. Balancing acidity and a long finish promise an exciting future for this wine.
